Subpoenas, Records Requests, and Custody Fights: A 5-Part Series for Mental Health Professionals

You're in the middle of a session-note review when an email arrives. It's from an attorney, and it's a records request for a client's records. Or a parent in a custody dispute demands access to their child's file, and you're not sure they're entitled to it. Or you open a subpoena and wonder what, exactly, you're required to do.
These moments are some of the most stressful in clinical practice. They can feel like a collision between ethical duties, clients' trust, and the legal system. Whether you were trained to handle these situations or learned as you went, the laws keep changing, which makes a refresher always worth your time.
The Linden Group is offering Subpoenas, Records Requests, and Custody Fights, a weekly five-part live series designed for mental health professionals to give you clear, practical footing when the legal world comes knocking.
What We'll Cover
Who Gets to Say Yes? Custody, decision-making, and treating children. When parents disagree, who can consent to treatment? We'll untangle the questions that come up most often when working with minors.
Whose File Is It? Access to client records for adults and children. Who can request records, what can you release, and what are your obligations when the answer isn't obvious?
When Confidentiality Ends. Exceptions to confidentiality. Confidentiality is foundational, but it isn't absolute. We'll walk through the situations where the rules change and how to handle them with care.
New Laws and Rule Revisions. What changed and what it means for your practice. Rules shift, and staying current protects both you and your clients.
When the Lawyers Call. Subpoenas, testimony, and working with attorneys. What to do when a subpoena arrives, how to respond, and how to prepare if you're asked to testify.
Why This Series
Each session is built around real situations clinicians face, so you can leave with answers you can use right away rather than abstract theory. The weekly format also gives you time to absorb each topic and apply it to your own caseload before the next session.
Missing one week doesn't mean missing out. If you only need a specific topic, you can register for a single session instead of the full series.
